I think there are probably a lot of comparisons to a finely tuned, high performance engine I could make here (and so I will).

Things that make for a good engine include an optimum stroke (length), that's true. But there's also bore (girth). A good connecting rod that is extremely stiff attached to a rock solid piston can't be overstated, but it must also be capable of taking a real pounding. That circular motion felt throughout must also be smooth and reliable. Must be able to rev up to considerable RPM on request, with plenty of torque (yep, RPM/torque, not a lot of difference there). Good lubrication is tremendously important. And the spark at the top of that cylinder head that sets off the hot release, at just the right critical time, makes that engine purr.

One additional consideration, if you can't get great mileage off it, you might need to consider a trade in, or better still just get several different models and use them interchangeably.
